At Dawn We Slept Social Network

@dawnweslept comprises a social network to share our journey in health, fitness & nutrition as part of our everyday lifestyle.

About the Name!

I'm keen on fitness but not a fitness freak and that's why I chose the name At Dawn We Slept because I don't like to get up at dawn and off to gym; although sometimes I must!

I'm now 10% lighter, very fit for my age, have heaps more muscle mass and am controlling my diabetes well. Join us here to share your journey.

The Network

@dawnweslept is a social network, We have nothing to sell you but everything to share with you.

I work out primarily at the gym and treat each session as another personal experiment. I share with you what I do, how I do it, what motivates me & what inspires me and sometimes what frustrates me. I also search for answers which I share with you, and add tips, tricks, food & personal experiences, and sometimes I talk about about my dog and non-gym life as well.

How about joining the network and doing the same? We're all keen to hear of your experiences and successes in keeping fit and healthy.

And upload pictures of your pets for us. A few of us are keen on dachshunds, we'd love to see your pet.

Reality Check

We give lots of small tips about small points in exercise and fitness, but this is not to be perfectionist it is just out of interest. We think that being obsessive and compulsive about each minute of exercise and each morsel of food never produces lasting results and happiness! Find the strategies and connections that keep you on track and invest your resources there. And good luck!

Kettlebells for Xmas not such a great idea?

My gym has kettlebells on the front counter - suggesting them as Xmas presents for you or your friends.

I wasn't so impressed with this idea as I think that it could be dangerous.

I've been using kettlebells for about 6 months now and I… Continue

Calorie Restriction debate Misses the Point

The NY Times reported on July 9 the results of studies, one conducted by a team led by Ricki J. Colman and Richard Weindruch at the University of Wisconsin, which reported increased lifespan for monkeys on calorie-restricted diets.

The headline of the article is Dieting Monkeys Offer Hope for Living Longer. However the various sources quoted by the journali… Continue

How I Fell into Kettlebells and am Enjoying It

I'm now into my 3rd week of instruction on kettlebells and really enjoying them, and the potential. In fact I am excited by their potential after each lesson - my three so far. I fell into kettlebell instruction when I asked at the gym to be shown how to use the TRX rack which they had just installed. The instructor who was showing me TRX was asking me about my usual exercise routine, and I mentioned that I was happy with it but wanted to add a couple of routines.

One of those which I wa… Continue

First TRX Lesson - What Did I Learn?

TRX systems are the hanging suspension training straps which you use to balance yourself in all different forms of body weight exercises. They also come as other brands such as FlexStraps. A rack of these appeared recently in the exercise room of my local gym, so I asked for instruction as I'm always interested in new and different bodyweight-style exercises.

Interval Training Does Not Burn More Fat

Howls of protest I hear across the blogs and twitter channels of the fitness world, since we're repeatedly told that without doubt interval training is a must if you want to lose weight and to give up on the long aerobic stints on the road or treadmill or exercise bike.

I'm not a researcher, and we all know that research can lie, but Drs Najjar and Wisløff from Ohio and Norway respectively,… Continue

Being thin is sometimes seen as a goal in itself. While that's good in comparison to being overweight, since being overweight is associated with a shorter lifespan, it's not enough on its own to call yourself "healthy". Being healthy requires activi…
